Psalm 1:1-6                          THE GODLY MAN AS OPPOSED            SPE-03-07
                                          TO THE WORLDLY MAN

SUBJECT:  Special Sermons.
TITLE:  The Godly Man as Opposed to the Worldly Man.
PROPOSITION:  To look at the differences between the man who chooses to
follow God and the man who chooses to follow the world.
OBJECTIVE:  So we can honor our father’s who have chosen to follow God.

INTRODUCTION:
1. Read the text.
2. Regarding the text.
(1) David talks about the characteristics of the man of God.
        A. Contextually this includes both men and women for it uses “man” to refer
to mankind.
        B. However, this being “father’s day” we want to use it to apply to those
fathers who have chosen to follow God rather than the ways of the world.
(2) In this passage David gives several very important lessons about any and all
who follow God.
(3) Let us look and see what these lessons are.
3. Reference To S.T.P.O.

DISCUSSION:  IN OUR LESSON LET US NOTICE—
I. THE GODLY MAN WATCHES THE COMPANY HE KEEPS (1 Cor. 15:33).
1. He does not stand in the counsel of the ungodly.
        (1) This means that he does not stand with those who stand against God (Mt.
12:30)
                A. Whenever God, his church and/or his word is under attack he
defends them (Jude 3; Phil. 1:17).
                B. He makes his life’s mission to raise his children to do the same (Eph.
6:4).
        (2) The ungodly man associates with anything and everything that is evil
(Psa. 1:4).
                A. He will be among the first to attack that which is good (Isa. 5:20).
                B. He is not like the man of God, who upholds that which is good (Psa.
1:5).
2 He does not stand in the way of sinners.
        (1) You can tell him from the rest of the world (1 Pet. 2:9; Jas. 1:27).
                B. He stands firm in the old paths (Jer. 6:26).
                C. He does not participate in the things the world does (1 Jno. 2:15-17).
        (2) The worldly man participates in all things that the world participates in.
                A. He drinks, commits adultery, etc (Gal. 5:;19-21).
                B. He accepts things such as homosexuality, abortion, etc (Rom. 1:
26,27; 1 Jno. 3:15).
3. He does not sit in the seat of the scornful.
        (1) He does not scorn righteousness or truth (2 Pet. 2:3-5)
                A. He holds to that which is good (Rom. 12:9).
                B. His character is unquestionable (1 Tim. 3:7).
        (2) The ungodly man does scorn that which is good.
                A. This can be seen by those who have scorned those who voted
against embryonic stem cell research.
                B. This can be seen by those who contributed so much money to
having that amendment pass.

II HIS DELIGHT IS IN THE LAW OF THE LORD.
1.        How he respects the word of God.
        (1) He holds firm to God’s word as the inspired and inerrant word of God (2
Tim. 3:16,17; Jno. 17:17).
                A.  He receives as it is in truth the word of God (2 Thess. 2:13).
                B.  He holds to the pattern of sound words (2 Tim. 1:13).
                C.  He instructs his children to live this way (Prov. 22:6).
                D.  He treats his wife as the word would have him treat her (Eph. 5:28).
        (2) The worldly man is much different.
                A. To him the Bible is just another book and rarely if at all reads it (2
Tim. 2:15).
                B. If he does read it, he reads it to find problems with it (Jno. 17:17).
                C. He has little interest in his children and so he provoaks them to wrath
(Eph. 6:4).
                D. He has no problem with committing adultery against his wife ((Mt. 5:
28).
2. He meditates in the law of the Lord day and night.
        (1) He studies it as often as he can (1 Tim. 4:13).
        (2) The man of the world does not care for it because it is foolishness to him
(1 Cor. 2:14).

III. He is firmly grounded.
1. He is like a tree, by the river, whose roots run deep.
        (1) He is unmovable when it comes to what is right (1 Cor. 15:58).
        (2) He will not be swayed by false teachers (2 Pet. 2:1-3).
        (3) The ungodly man is different (Psa. 1:4).
2. He brings forth fruit and his fruit will not wither.
        (1) He knows that the only way he can be saved is by bringing fruit (Jno. 15:
1-6).
        (2) The ungodly man brings forth evil fruit and will perish (Mt. 7:17-19).
3. Whatever he does will prosper.
        (1) This is talking about spiritual prosperity.
                A. While there is nothing wrong with material prosperity his main
concern is spiritual growth (3 Jno. 2; 2 Pet. 3:18).
                B. The ungodly man looks for material prosperity.
        (2) He will spread God’s word and it will not return void (Isa. 55:11; 1 Cor. 1:
21).

CONCLUSION:
SUMMARY:  We have seen that the Godly man—
        1. Stands not in the counsel of the ungodly.
        2. Stands not in the way of sinners.
        3. Sits not in the seat of the scornful.
APPEAL:  Let us congratulate all Christian fathers for their character.
