| Jas. 1:10 AS THE LIFE OF A FLOWER SAL-16-07 SUBJECT: Salvation. TITLE: As the life of a flower. PROPOSITION: To look at James’ statement. OBJECTIVE: So we can learn what lessons it holds for us today. INTRODUCTION: 1. Read the text. 2. Regarding the text. (1) There are, but, few things that we are guaranteed on this earth after we are born. A. One guarantee is that we will die (Heb. 9:27). B. One guarantee is that we will spend eternity in heaven if we follow Christ (1 Jno. 5:13). C. One guarantee is that God will not lie (Tit. 1:2; Heb. 6:18). D. One guarantee is that if we don’t follow Christ we will spend eternity in hell (Mt. 25:41). (2) Other than that we have no guarantees in this life. A. James said that life is but a vapor (Jas. 4:14). B. It is here for a little while and then it is gone. (3) James also compared life to a flower which will pass away (Jas. 1:10). 3. Reference To S.T.P.O. DISCUSSION: IN OUR STUDY LET US NOTICE— I. THAT THIS LIFE IS FRAIL AND IS NOT MEANT TO BE PERMANENT. 1. All of us, deep within our own minds, have the idea that because we are here today that we will always be here. (1) Death is something which will come upon us all unless we are here when the Lord returns (1 Cor. 15:22, 50-51). (2) Death is inevitable (1 Cor. 15:32). 2. All of us, deep within our own minds, feel that we are invincible; we cannot be harmed or contract diseases. (1) Peter’s wife’s mother (Mt. 8:14). (2) Disease is a fact of life (Mt. 9:20-22). 3. The years hasten by like a dream, and some day we will all die (Eccl. 9:5). (1) We must come to accept this fact. (2) How shall we live knowing this to be factual (2 Pet. 2:10,11). II. HOW WE SHOULD LIVE OUR LIVES KNOWING THAT THEY ARE SO SHORT. 1. Our lives should be pure and sweet. (1) We are to be pure in heart (Mt. 5:8; Phil. 4:8). (2) Our works are to be as a sweet odor (Phil. 4:18). 2. We are to brighten the way for others. (1) We are to shine as lights in the world (Phil. 2:15). (2) Jesus was the true light, and we are to follow his examples (Jno. 1:4- 9; 1 Pet. 2:21). 3. We are to be as close to Christ as we can be. (1) He will teach us how to live (1 Cor. 11:1). (2) He will teach us how to love, and forgive (Jno. 13:34,35; Col. 3:13). III. THAT WE ARE TO TRUST ONLY CHRIST TO LEAD US TO HEAVEN. 1. We must believe that he is the Son of God. (1) Without this belief we cannot be saved (Jno. 8:24; Heb. 11:6). (2) We must trust in him and only in him (2 Cor. 1:9). 2. He will lead us to heaven. (1) There will be no tears there (Rev. 21:4). (2) There will be rejoicing there (Rev. 19:7). 3. As the life of a flower— (1) As the breath or a sigh, so the years glide away— (2) And alas we must die. CONCLUSION: SUMMARY: We have seen— 1. That life is frail and not meant to be permanent. 2. How we should live our lives because they are so frail. 3. That we are to trust only Christ to lead us to heaven. APPEAL: Are you ready to die today? If not, why not get ready today. Preached at Belle, MO on July 15, 2007, morning service. Ezk. 33:8 YOU NEVER MENTIONED HIM TO ME CHL-10-07 SUBJECT: Christian Living. TITLE: You Never Mentioned Him To Me. PROPOSITION: To look at Ezekiel’s statement. OBJECTIVE: To show how it applies to us today. INTRODUCTION: 1. Read the text. 2. Regarding the text. (1) We all are going to stand before the judgment seat of Christ some day (2 Cor. 5:10). A. We will all have to give an account for the things that we have done in this life. B. We are going to have justify how we have lived before God and how we have used the time he has given us (Mt. 25:14-30). (2) We live around people and most of the time we don’t even mention Christ to them. A. We may be afraid that they will reject us (1 Sam. 8:6,7). B. We may be afraid that some will mock us (2 Pet. 3:3,4; Acts 17:30- 34). (3) We are going to have to give an account for whatever is keeping us from preaching the gospel (Mk. 16:15-16). 3. Reference To S.T.P.O. DISCUSSION: IN OUR STUDY, LET US NOTICE— I. THAT NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO BE SAVED IN THE JUDGMENT. 1. Jesus made this proclamation (Mt. 7:21-23). (1) The majority takes the easy way out (Mt. 7:13) {current takes the path of least resistance}. (2) Not everyone who hears the gospel will obey (Rom. 10:16). 2. Those who have not obeyed the gospel will be lost. (1) Even those who have never heard the gospel will be lost (2 Thes. 1:7- 9). (2) Their sins are what will cause them to be lost (Isa. 59:1,2; Rom. 3:23; 6:23). 3. We need to realize that the loss of even one soul is going to be a terrible thing (2 Pet. 3:9). II. THAT IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE THE GOSPEL TO THE LOST. 1. The great commission. (1) We are to go into all the world and preach the gospel (Mk. 16:15,16). (2) We are to teach all nations (Mt. 28:19,20). 2. We are the earthen vessels to take the treasure to those who are lost (2 Cor. 4:7). (1) We must be like Isaiah (Isa. 6:1-8). (2) We are to teach others to teach (2 Tim. 2:2). 3. Winning souls is our mission on this earth (Prov. 11:30). III. THAT IF WE DO NOT DO WHAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DO OTHERS WILL BE LOST. 1. One cannot come into contact with the blood without obedience to the gospel. (1) It is the power of God unto salvation (Rom. 1:16). (2) It is the power of God to those who are saved (1 Cor. 1:18). 2. If we do not do our job people will be lost and it will be our fault. (1) Ezekeil’s statement (Ezk. 33:8,9). (2) We will have to explain why we didn’t teach them the lost and we will be lost with them for our lack of action (Jno. 15:1-6). 3. The worst thing that we can hear on that day, other than our own condemnation and that of our family members, is that we never mentioned him to those around us and now they are lost because of it. CONCLUSION: SUMMARY: We have seen in our lesson— 1. That not everyone is going to be saved in the day of judgment. 2. That it is our job to teach those who are lost. 3. That if we don’t do our job they will be lost and it will be our fault. APPEAL: We need to mention him to people around us so they can be saved.
