(3) With so much at stake and so many battles being fought over it, it surely has had an impact upon mankind. 3. Reference To S.T.P.O. DISCUSSION: GIVE ME THE BIBLE BECAUSE— I. IT IS THE DIVINELY INSPIRED MESSAGE FROM GOD TO MAN (CHART 2). 1. The Bible, itself, affirms that it is inspired. (1) Paul’s statement to Timothy (2 Tim. 3:16). (2) Paul’s statement to the churches of Galatia (Gal. 1:11). (3) Peter’s affirmation (2 Pet. 1:20,21). 2. The message to man is found in God’s theme of the Bible— (1) The theme of the Bible (Gen. 3:15). (2) The theme of the Old Testament (Isa. 7:14; 9:6). (3) The theme of the New Testament (Acts 1:11). 3. What does the message say? (1) Man is lost in sin (Rom. 6:23; Isa. 59:1,2; Rom. 5:8,9). (2) Man has a way to be saved (1 Jno. 2:1-3). (3) All man has to do is to obey the word of God (Rom. 6:17). II. OF ITS GREAT INFLUENCE UPON MANKIND (CHART 3). 1. Many ridicule the Bible because of the wars that God had Israel fight. (1) The Amalekite destruction (1 Sam. 15:2,3).
years. B. Duet. 25:17,18; Jud. 6:3-6; 1 Sam. 14:47,48. 2. However, the Bible continues to influence mankind in a positive way. (1) Andrew Jackson: “The bible is the rock on which our republic stands.” (2) Abe Lincoln: “I am profitably engaged in the reading of the Bible. Take all of this upon reason that you can, and the balance on faith, and you will live and die a better man.” (3) Theodore Roosevelt: “Almost every man who has by his life work added to the sum of human achievements of which the race is proud—has based his life work largely upon the teaching of the Bible.” 3. Where the Bible has gone— (1) Womanhood has been elevated (Phil. 4:3; 1 Pet. 3:5-6; Prov. 31:10). (2) The relationship between the husband and wife is strengthened (Eph. 5:22, 23,25,28). (3) Children are reared in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Eph. 6:4). (4) Our nation is strengthened (Prov. 14:34). (5) People love one another (Mt. 7:12; 19:19; Jas. 2:8). (6) People help one another (Gal. 6:10; Jas. 1:27; 2 Cor. 9;13). III. OF WHAT IT SYMBOLIZES (CHART 4). 1. It symbolizes great light in a world of darkness. (1) Jesus came to bring light to those in darkness (Jno. 1:7-12). (2) David said that the word of God was a light to his path (Psa. 119:105). (3) God’s word gives light to the innocent (Psa. 119:130). 2. It symbolizes a mirror for us to gauge how we look spiritually. (1) James’ analogy (Jas. 1:21-25). (2) We can all see how we look in this glass (2 Cor. 3:18). 3. It symbolizes great power. (1) Paul’s description of it (Heb. 4:12). (2) It is the power of God unto salvation (Rom. 1:16). (3) It is the power that gives us all things pertaining to life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3). CONCLUSION: SUMMARY: We have seen that we should want the Bible because— 1. It is the divinely inspired message from God to man. 2. Of its influence upon mankind. 3. Of what it symbolizes. APPEAL: Let us look at these things and desire to study the word of God. Psalm 119:105 GIVE ME THE BIBLE (Part 2) BIB-02-07 SUBJECT: The Bible. TITLE: Give Me The Bible (Part 2). PROPOSITION: To begin looking at reasons why we should want the Bible. OBJECTIVE: So we can all have a greater appreciation of God’s word. INTRODUCTION: 1. Read the text. 2. Regarding the text. (1) Nearly everyone knows about the Bible today (Chart 1). A. It is the most quoted book on earth. B. It is the most celebrated book on earth. C. It is the most criticized book on earth. D. However, it is treated, it is the most important book on earth. (2) The battle wages over whether the Bible is a book that needs to be followed. A. Infidels attack it constantly— B. Believers hold it more dearly and closer than ever.
A. It is the divinely inspired message from God to man. B. Of its great influence upon mankind. C. Of what it symbolizes. 3. Reference To S.T.P.O. DISCUSSION: GIVE ME THE BIBLE BECAUSE— I. OF ITS GREAT AUTHORITY OVER MANKIND (CHART 5). 1. Jesus said that his word would judge us in the last day (Jno. 12:48). (1) If that word is going to be our judge, then it will of necessity have to have authority over us. (2) This is why we are to make sure that we have authority for whatever we do (Col. 3:17). (3) If we speak we must speak as the oracles of God (1 Pet. 4:11). 2. The Bible has authority over our worship to God. (1) It is to be done in spirit and in truth (Jno. 8;32). (2) It is to be done in strict accordance with God’s will (Jas. 2:10). (3) We have no right to change it in any way form or fashion (Deut. 4:2). 3. The Bible has authority over us in our personal lives. (1) It teaches us to be modest (1 Tim. 2:9). (2) It teaches us to live honestly (Rom. 12:17). (3) It teaches us to live the Christian life daily (Heb. 4:9-11). II. OF ITS ALL-SUFFICENCY (CHART 6). 1. As it is from God, it needs nothing more to explain it, complement it or go with it. (1) It gives us comfort all by itself (Psa. 23:1-6; 1 Thess. 4:18). (2) It gives us strength for our life as Christians (Eph. 3:16; Col. 1:11) (3) It gives instruction for righteousness (2 Tim 3:16). (4) It makes the man of God complete (2 Tim. 3:17). 2. There is no need for anything other than the Bible.
and sanctification (Acts 2:37; Acts 8:35-39; 1 Jno. 2:14). III. OF ITS INDESTRUCTIBILITY (CHART 7). 1. The evil king Jehoiakim had the word of God cut up and burned (Jer. 36:22:23). (1) This, he thought, would take care of the word of God, but he was mistaken (Jer. 36:27-29). (2) One can burn the Bible, cut it up, chain it to the pulpit, ban it from school, but it continues to be the most circulated book on earth. 2. People don’t even try to destroy it anymore, they know that they can’t. What they try to do now is to destroy people’s faith in it, but with all their efforts, the Bible is still here and is still being studied. 3. One person once said that the internet would be the destruction of the Bible, but there are more Bible websites on the internet than atheistic. 4. In order to destroy the Bible one would have to destroy— (1) Every book and song ever written about it that quotes it. (2) Every person, even atheists, who have studied it. (3) Then destroy God himself (an impossible task). CONCLUSION: SUMMARY: We have seen that we should want the Bible because-- 1. Of its great authority over mankind. 2. Of its all sufficiency. 3. Of its indestructibility. APPEAL: The Bible (Chart 8). |
